Guest Kim Mutch Emerson

Week three of the Virtual Blog tour welcomes a wonderful, spirited lady who is a friend to the people, a friend to me. Please hold out your arms and welcome Kim Mutch Emerson as this week's Guest Blogger for Ravaging Thoughts. I pre warn you all, she can be a bit mad but you just HAVE to read her post! For this week, our guest had to write a post that they would have written for their own blog.

Ranting of a mad writer – oops, hold on; let me grab my writing hat. ~ Kim Mutch Emerson

You probably think I am joking, but nope. I wear a bowler hat when I write. It’s a tradition left over from when the days of my early childhood; a six years old bent over the little folding table I adopted for my desk. I also wore red plastic sunglasses that I poked the lenses out. I have no clue why I thought writers wore hats and glasses, but in my mind it symbolized the genius behind the words that created magical worlds and bigger-than-life characters. There was nothing I wanted more than to have my book in the school library. The reasoning behind that was a deeper desire. I wanted to give other people the same experience I had when I had the first really good book read to me. I wanted to inspire love, determination, victory over evil, hope, imagination, and dreams. I was an odd child, I know.
We've all done this before
At any rate, today I am thinking about dreams, I am wondering what dreams people had when they were children. I know a lot of other girls my age dreamt of the day they would be mothers, some wanted to be nurses, one wanted to be a banker.

What did you want to do with your life? Have you fulfilled that dream? I left my dream behind for many years. I didn’t stop writing; I just stopped dreaming about sending my writing out into the world. And then one day I said, “It’s time.”

If you have left your dream behind, what is stopping you? Is it fear of failure or fear of success? Is it fear of rejection or too much attention?

I would love to discuss this and perhaps together we can break through that barrier.

  1. I don't recall ever truly knowing what I wanted to do with my life Kim, but I know now that I want to write and write I shall. There is nothing now that can stop me from writing, except the fear of being alone through it all. But thanks to wonderful people such as yourself, and those in the Koda Group, even that fear is pushed aside.

  2. Jennifer,

It means a lot to me to know that the FB group I started is a "home" for so many writers that would feel alone without that support. I know loneliness. I know that fear. Stay connected with us and keep on the path you are traveling. Dreams do come true!

  3. What did I want to do when I was a kid? I wanted to be a mom. I had no idea for a career, hair stylist, factory worker, like my mom. I really had no idea. All I knew for sure was that I wanted to be a mom. I loved stories and was always making something up. When we walked to school in the middle of winter, snow, cold and all. I would imagine we had our own personal sun right above us so we could go to school in shorts, no snow or ice where we walked. Crazy huh? lol but yeah, I would dream stuff up like that. I told stories to my kids, We would read books too, but they loved my stories because they would be in it. (I am working on that fear Jennifer Don!) Now my youngest son and I have written a book. We made a promise to each other and I plan to keep that promise. I promised we would get the book published. I didn't have a clue as to how that would happen. I promised to get it out there for others to read. Still didn't know how to do that either. My son promised we would finish the book. We did that. I have kept my promise and found a way to publish the book, I am working on marketing the book. I can't hold a job for very long due to either personal problems or company goes under. But we have been working on this project since 2009. If it takes another 5 years to get it off the ground then so be it. But I will keep working on it. Am I sharing way too much? probably. But I think its important today. Don't know why. If you want to know what a promise looks like, take a look at our book. http://amzn.to/HZ2q9V. This is our promise, our dreams and hopefully the beginning of our future!

  4. Wendy,

I love your personal story of working with your son and getting it done no matter the odds. I guess it strikes a chord in me because my son and I are doing the same thing! I am so looking forward to the finished product and getting it out to the world this fall.

One of the things that inspires me most is the determination of the human spirit and I see that in you. I see it in your son, Charles. I know others will be inspired by your story in the years to come.

Thank you for sharing you and your book with us!

  8. Love this! Kim, you inspire me, you always have. I love you, we have shared teaching, worshiping, music and family. I Cherish our past and stand amazed that at this point in life, we are once again in sync as authors. Crazy how the seasons of life change before us and we journey through them together. You, Kim, are a wonderful friend and beautiful sister!

  11. I wanted to do so much when I was young! I wanted to be jockey! A veternarian (until I realized that I had to deal with dying animals too) I wanted to be a model but never even reached 5'2".And I have always been kind of round! Yet ever since I was a child I have written. Becoming disabled limited some dreams but intensified others.

    1. Karen, you are the light in the darkness for others, you are the torch that burns within the soul. When I look at you, I am in awe of you and what you do. Keep that torch burning and others will look to you and feel the same as I do!

    2. Karen,

Often times life brings us those old lemons and as I have always coached people, "don't just make lemonade, set up a lemonade stand". That is exactly what you have done and it gives you the opportunity to inspire others to rise above and beyond!

Mutch love and blessings to you!

  13. I wanted to be three things when I grew up: a teacher, a writer, and a mom.

I went to college to be a teacher, but life interfered and I haven't quite achieved that goal. I write daily and though I'm not (yet) published, the fact that words keep flowing out makes me happy. I'm content to write for myself if that's how it must be. The mom issue... its still pending.

Kim, I loved your anecdote about the bowler hat and glasses. I wish I had known you as a kid. We'd have been weirdos together, I think. :)

    1. Penelope,

I laughed right out loud when I read about being weirdos together. I'm not sure the community would have lived through it if we had taken them together. :)

You are young yet and have plenty of time to see your dreams bloom and become reality!

      Big hugs,
      Kim (KD Emerson)

  14. I wanted to be a writer. I realised this when I was about nine years old and my teacher had given me a big compliment in front of the entire class about my story I made up about little people living under my floor boards. I was told all my life that being a writer wasnt a career for someone from a third world country, that I couldnt survive on it. But I went through high school dreaming of it, reading as much as I could, writing fanfiction, and turning my life into stories of what I wish it could be. I left high school and went straight to work because my mother was ill. I left a job with lots of possibilities to join the radio station to write advertisements. It wasnt novel writing, but it was writing and it fulfilled me. However, after two years it didnt work out, I was too strongwilled and outspoken for a government agency. From there I joined marketing, I did one semester of college in Marketing and I had to leave because of my job. I never returned to college, but I took small classes in Marketing and Communication to get by in my job. I kept writing, a little here and there mostly as theraphy. In november 2011 I joined Nano and I started dreaming again. I started seeing that life in my mind as a novelist, being able to produce something people would want to read, even if I wouldnt be able to have it as a career. I am still fighting, still trying, still dreaming, to get that manuscript out, to finish it, to believe in it and to publish it. It is wonderful to read that others go through the same, it doesnt make me feel so alone and I love Masterkoda for that. My guy is supportive and he keeps telling me to push through with it. My best friend is always eager to read my stuff and share it with her friends, they all want to see it published from the synopsis she gaves them. I have a support system, people who understad why I cant stop writing. So because of that, I keep writing, and keep dreaming of the day when I can be a writer, when I can return to college and this time for my English Degree, when I can call myself an Author.

  15. When I was a child, I wanted to be a mom, work with kids with disabilities, be a concert pianist, be a professional Girl Scout, and be a teacher. I became a mom to 6 wonderful kids, including a set of twins. I have spent years working with people with disabilities, even evaluating and running camps for them. I never got to the concert pianist level because life happened, but music is a huge part of my life. I was a preschool teacher, then taught at the Christian school my kids attended, and from there I home schooled my three youngest kids through high school. I was a founding member of a Medieval reenactment group and taught many workshops on different aspects of medieval life. I spent 35 years as a Girl Scout, including almost 25 as a leader. Along the way, I have written many things, and some were published in newsletters. But it was my older son who convinced me to try NaNoWriMo in 2007. He had prticipated for a few years and wanted to be my writing buddy. He made it through the first week that year, leaving me to sink or swim on my own. Finally, in January of this year, after talking with my long-time friend Kim Emerson, I got it out, polished it up, and am waiting for it to be published, hopefully this fall. In the meantime, I am doing Camp NaNo now, and I edit and read. All my children and grandchildren are readers, or are being read to frequently. I want part of my legacy to them to be the love of good books, and a lifelong desire to learn.

    1. DeEtte,

What a full and rich life you have lived. I was so touched when I read that it was through talking with me that you pulled out your manuscript and sent it to a publisher. Life can have it's rough edges, but wow what a great adventure it is as well!

Sending love and positive energy your way,

  16. Kim, face it you rock! =) I see it in everyone's posts and comments. And I agree!

When I was younger I wanted to be - in this order: A belly dancer, a Solid Gold dancer, a model, a flight attendant, an office manager, and finally a power house business woman (with no husband, no kids).

I cannot say any of the above is on my resume, but that's okay. I've held so many other positions (being a military spouse moving all the time does that), and each one was rewarding in it's own way. Currently I am a stay at home soccer mom of two happily married for 21+ years, and my books are being published by a small press publisher. I can't complain! I love my life! :)

  17. Natalie,

And I love hearing about your life! AS a Solid Gold Dancer, do you have to be dipped in real gold? your net worth would sky rocket. I am so looking forward to this fall when we join forces (and books). What will the world do when we hit them by storm?
